Identify what is already there
Share the wood or composite type and the last coating used, if known. Photograph peeling areas, worn paths, and sections that stay damp. Loose or damaged boards and unresolved water problems need attention beyond a color change.
Decide how much wood character you want
Opaque finishes create a more uniform color effect; less opaque options reveal more of the wood’s appearance. Tell the painter whether you want visible grain or a stronger color change. Existing coatings and surface condition can affect which approach is practical.
When to discuss SuperDeck
Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne Solid Color Deck Stain is an option for compatible exterior horizontal wood when an opaque finish is wanted. It is a specific stain, not a universal recommendation for every deck. Composite decking requires checking the decking manufacturer’s guidance.
Agree on preparation and timing
Ask how the existing finish will be assessed and what cleaning or removal steps the selected system requires. Follow the relevant product directions for application conditions, drying, and return to use. A quick surface refresh and a full coating removal are different scopes.
Make the estimate easier
Bring photographs, approximate deck dimensions, current coating information, and your preferred appearance. Mention railings and vertical parts separately so they are not silently assumed to be included.
