Identify the metal or other substrate, existing coating, corrosion, indoor or outdoor location, and exposure to moisture or cleaning chemicals. Send clear photos and any existing product specifications.
Select a system, not just a can
DTM acrylic, industrial enamel, and a rust-inhibitive primer serve different roles. The preparation standard, primer, finish coats, film thickness, and application conditions must come from the selected manufacturer specification.
Know when the job needs a specialist
Immersion, aggressive chemical exposure, high heat, structural corrosion, or regulated facility requirements may call for a specialist coating assessment. Ask about project suitability before treating a basic maintenance coating as a complete solution.
Does direct-to-metal mean no prep or primer?
No. DTM products still require suitable surface preparation. Whether primer is needed depends on the substrate, exposure, condition, and exact product specification.
